Small Potato, How To Create a WordPress Theme, and New Redesign

Tung Do also known as Small Potato seems to be slowly coming back to the WordPress community. For those who don’t know him, he was very respected by the community as the founder of WPdesigner.com which is now dead. I don’t know what his plans are, but he’s definitely designing again and you can find some of his new work at his personal blog.

I learned a lot from his blog and one particular series of posts that helped me a lot was called “So you want to create WordPress themes huh?” However, since this series was written more than 2 years ago, Ian Stewart from ThemeShaper.com felt the need to create a new series teaching how to create a WordPress theme. So, if you always wanted to create your own WordPress theme and didn’t know how to, go check this series out!

One last topic that I want to talk about in this post is the redesign of this blog. As you can see, I’ve designed a child theme using the Thematic theme framework created by Ian who I’ve mentioned earlier. I actually wanted to create my own theme again at first, but after I played around with Thematic for a few weeks, I just decided to design a child theme and I’m happy with the result. Hopefully with the redesign, it’ll be a new start and I’ll be updating the blog regularly.

By the way, feedback on the redesign is appreciated. It could be constructive criticism, tips, or whatever you want to talk about it. I think they will all make me a better designer, so they are all welcome.

Small Potato helped me out a lot also. His tutorials were so detailed, it was easy for beginners to understand. he started the original WP themes club too.

  3. The work of Small Potato at WP Designer has definitely been an inspiration to many. His work at least partly inspired another series of WordPress tutorials.

Something that has confused many people is the distinction between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. Let’s clear it up. WordPress.com is brought to you by some of the same folks who work on WordPress, the open source blogging software. In addition.

Web designers can get inspiration from everything they get around. This potato is a mere example of it.

I will check this series out as I want to create a totally new, and for-me-only, custom theme.
But I am not as enthused about this as I was due to the directions WP seems to be moving in.
    (I'm still going to!)
    Also, I do miss WPdesigner.

Good sources of information. I like your theme since it is so clean and simple to understand and is not unnecessarily cluttered. Good work.

I've been using WP for years on all my sites, but to be honest designing new themes is still beyond me. I'll leave it in capable hands of Small Potato ;)

  9. Cool! It's good that Small Potato is back. I liked many of his themes.

I don't do any design. There are so many premium themes (some are even free) I don't need to do it myself

    Hi,
Under my header there is Entries RSS and Comments RSS and a Search field.

I would like to remove this. Is that possible on this Digg 3 Column theme? I’ve looked everywhere but can’t find somewhere to remove these 3 items.

    Thanks,
    Sandra
